Using Your Status Card for Tax-Exempt Online Purchases

White Cross E-Store offers GST/HST tax exemption for eligible First Nations customers making online purchases, in accordance with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) guidelines. To qualify for tax relief on online orders, specific CRA requirements must be met. Please review the information below carefully before placing your order.

CRA Guidelines for Online Purchases

Under CRA policy, businesses selling products online, by telephone, or through other electronic methods must maintain supporting documentation to validate GST/HST exemption eligibility. Because original Status Cards cannot be presented online, the CRA allows customers to submit supporting documentation electronically before completing a tax-exempt purchase.

Accepted documentation may include:

  1. A copy or photo of a valid Status Card or Temporary Confirmation of Registration Document (TCRD).
  2. Supporting certification for eligible bands or band-empowered entities, where applicable.

Eligibility Requirements for Full GST/HST Tax Exemption

To qualify for full GST/HST exemption on online purchases,
all of the following conditions must be met:

  1. You are the holder of a valid Status Card.
  2. Your primary residence is located on a reserve.
  3. The name on the payment method matches the name on the Status Card.
  4. Your order is shipped directly to an address located on a reserve.

Eligibility Requirements for Ontario First Nations HST Rebate

Ontario residents who do not qualify for full GST/HST exemption may still qualify for the Ontario First Nations point-of-sale rebate (provincial portion of HST).

To qualify:

  1. You are the holder of a valid Status Card.
  2. The name on the payment method matches the name on the Status Card.
  3. Your order is shipped to an address within Ontario.

How to Apply for Tax-Exempt Online Purchasing

If you meet the eligibility requirements above, please follow these steps before placing your order:

1. Complete the Status Card Submission Form

Before placing an online order, you must complete our Status Card Submission Form. Online tax exemptions must be verified in advance and cannot be applied retroactively after checkout.

2. Submit the Required Information

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Phone Number
  • Email Address
  • Shipping Address
  • City, Province, Postal Code
  • Upload a copy or photo of your valid Status Card (front and back)

Additional verification may be requested if necessary.

3. Account Verification

Once your submission has been reviewed, our team will verify your eligibility and update your customer account to reflect applicable tax exemptions or rebates.

4. Wait for Confirmation

Please wait for confirmation from our team before placing your online order.

Accuracy of Information: The CRA may impose penalties, interest, or fines for misuse or misrepresentation of GST/HST exemption eligibility. Please ensure that all submitted information is accurate and up to date.

Tax exemption eligibility applies only to qualifying online retail purchases and shipping conditions as outlined by CRA guidelines. Eligibility is determined based on the documentation provided, payment information, and shipping destination associated with the order.
